By Aaron Humes: Action in the William Dawson Sprite – Digi Youth Basketball Tournament 2023 moved indoors on July 29 to the HUB Resource and Community Center on Lake Independence Boulevard.
According to coordinator Douglas Hyde, even though the tournament was affected by the events of the last week, players still showed up to “ball” as well as take advantage of life skills lessons off the court.
Tournament participant Steve Moss was one of those killed in the week of violence preceding the State of Emergency.
Hyde remarked: “Every week, every game, Steve Moss made it to his games and played with high energy and passion on the basketball court. He had a stylish dribble and once given the opening space, Stevey will make that layup look beautiful with finesse. We will definitely miss your presence Steve but most of all, we will that big smile of yours. Sleep in Pease my young brother.”
He added, “We must continue to build more places and spaces for our communities and young people to positively recreate, mediate, meditate, heal, chillax, and have clean & healthy fun.”
Game one was a no-contest as Kraal Road Boyz and Complex Titans both failed to appear. The rest of the game results are as follows: Game 2 – Boom Ballers defeated 2.0 BZ, 33-31; Game 3 – Third World defeated Fort George, 37-28; Game 4 – Freetown Hitters defeated Sandhill Heats, 55-32; Game 5 – Tora Bora won over Protel BPO by default, 20-0; Game 6 – City Boys defeated Freetown Hitters, 56-37; Game 7 – Port Loyola Titans defeated Dan One, 51-46 and Game 8 – Hard Rock Boyz defeated Casava Youths, 52-46.
