International News: Mexico cracking down on performers of ‘misogynistic’ songs

Mexico City

Posted: Tuesday, August 1, 2023. 2:28 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The city council of Chihuahua has implemented a measure where performers of songs deemed to be misogynistic will be fined.

According to the BBC, performers could be fined up to 1.2m pesos for the playing of lyrics that “discriminate” against women amid a “pandemic” of gender-based violence.

Data from the United Nations indicate that 10 women and girls are murdered everyday in Mexico.

In Chihuahua, authorities have also clamped down on songs seen as glorifying drug crime.

Therefore, lyrics promoting women’s “denigration, discrimination, marginalisation or exclusion” will be prohibited.

Mexican officials say that the move is aimed at protecting the dignity of women and the family, and to uphold human rights law.
