By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Mexican Agency of International Cooperation for Development (Amexcid), with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), distributed agricultural packages for the Sembrando Vida Project farmers in the Stann Creek and Corozal Districts.

“The Sembrando Vida project is a joint initiative between the Governments of Mexico and Belize, established on May 7th, 2022, during the visit of the Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador,” MAFSE said.

“Its main objective is to promote socio-economic development and cooperation between the two countries in the agricultural sector.”

MAFSE said the Sembrando Vida project, funded by Amexcid, is an initiative to help small farmers become more self-sustaining and consists of three main components: Economic Package, Agricultural Package, and Capacity Building/Training Component.

Under the Economic Package, the beneficiaries receive BZ $2,000 over the duration of the 8-month project. The aim of the financial support is to help the small farmers to invest in their farming activities and improve their livelihood.

The Agriculture Package, which includes essential resources such as seeds, fertilizers, tools, fruit trees, and forest trees, seeks to help the farmers to improve their agricultural productivity by increasing crop yields, diversifying agricultural production, and promoting sustainable farming practices.

Through the Capacity Building/Training Component, the farmers are trained in various aspects of agriculture to build their skills, techniques, and knowledge in order to improve their farming practices and ensure the long-term sustainability of the project’s impact.

“The bi-lateral and technical cooperation between Belize and Mexico in areas of mutual interest, particularly in agriculture, strengthens the ties between the two nations,” MAFSE said.

“By fostering collaboration and sharing expertise, both countries can leverage each other’s strengths and experiences to create a more robust agricultural sector.”
