Father charged for abandoning son after leaving infant home alone to look for wife in the middle of the night

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man of a Gladden Street address has been charged for abandoning his infant son after allegedly leaving the child at home alone in the middle of the night to go looking for the child’s mother, his common-law-wife.

Michael Cowo, 34, appeared unrepresented in court #5 today where he was read a single charge of abandonment of an infant.

According to reports, on July 30, Cowo left his son at home alone in the wee hours of the morning, to go looking for his common-law-wife, Elizabeth Requeña. A neighbor later told police that she found the child crying outside her home around 3:30 a.m., so she took him in.

Cowo’s mother, Yvette Thompson, made the missing persons report to police after she visited the home and was informed by Requeña that they were unable to locate the child. Police made a check at the home but no one was present; however, Requeña was later located at the Mahogany Street sub-station where she reported that she left the home at around midnight in Cowo’s care.

The child was later found at the neighbor’s home and was handed over to his grandmother. The Social Services Department was then informed about the incident, prompting Cowo’s arrest.

The prosecutor in the case is awaiting instruction from his superior as to whether they will proceed against Cowo summarily or with an indictment.

There was no objection to bail by the prosecutor and the Magistrate granted him bail in the sum of $3,000 plus one surety of the same amount or two sureties of $1,500 each, which he met.

Cowo is due back in court on August 18.
