Mother says son Akeem Augustus, accused of attempted murder of Tyler Lewis in Hattieville, was celebrating his birthday

Posted: Wednesday, August 2, 2023. 1:45 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: 28-year-old Akeem Augustus was reportedly identified as the shooter of 25-year-old Tyler Lewis last Sunday in the village of Hattieville, Belize District.

But after he appeared in court on Tuesday, his mother Loretta Smith spoke to our court reporter to say she has a rock-solid alibi for the time of the incident – she and her son were celebrating his 28th birthday, which fell last week Monday.

According to Smith, “When my son told me about the shooting, I told him well you don’t need to worry, because are on our own way. I don’t know what is happening in Hattieville. So then we went to our house. In the morning we got a call about 8 a.m. saying that it was Akeem, they were calling his name. I said what they are crazy, nobody can’t call my son’s name, because we were out most of the time on Sunday. …now, [last week] Friday, 3 trucks load of police came, they disrespectful – they called my son all kinds of names and I tell them that they could do what they want, but nobody put their hands on my child, because I will take them where they need to go. I will take them to higher people and we will take it from there….I want them to know I will not stop, because I have footage, I have where we were, everybody who was with us and they knew where we were.”

She also alleged that her son has been unfairly accused of every little thing that happens in the village and that, unlike Lewis, he is no gang member or troublemaker.

Nonetheless, Augustus is charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm to commit maim and wounding upon Tyler Lewis.

No plea was taken from Augustus and due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied and Augustus was remanded to prison until October 2.
