Caribbean community endorses multi-national force to support Haiti amid humanitarian crisis

Posted: Friday, August 4, 2023. 4:50 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Haiti is currently grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by escalating gang violence.

Today, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) expressed its support for the formation of a multi-national force to aid Haiti, welcoming the decision by Jamaica and the Bahamas to collaborate with Kenya in this significant initiative.

In a formal statement, CARICOM said, “The Caribbean Community anticipates that the United Nations Security Council will fully endorse the establishment of the multi-national force. This endorsement would serve as a tangible demonstration of the international community’s commitment to enhancing the security and humanitarian conditions in Haiti and aiding in the restoration of law and order.”

Last month, as leaders from CARICOM convened, they voiced their profound concern regarding the dire humanitarian, security, and governance challenges confronting their sister Member State, Haiti.

In addition to expressing their concern, CARICOM reiterated a strong pledge to persist in collaborative efforts with both the Haitian Government and all relevant stakeholders. Their aim is to find a Haitian-led solution that will effectively address the nation’s current plight.
