By Breaking Belize News Staff: Christie Joann Garbutt, a career educator and daughter of Independence Village, has been chosen for the Chevening Scholarship, the British High Commission announced on Friday.
As a Chevening scholar, Christie will be pursuing a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Change at the University of Durham.
“Born in Independence Village and raised in the Culture Capital of Belize. Christie Garbutt is a true daughter of the South. She has been a well-known educator in her immediate and surrounding community for over a decade. She delights in being a steward of positive change. Christie views education as a vehicle of upward social mobility and a catalyst for generational change. For her, education continues to be the incomparable equalizer in an unequal society. With these beliefs at the core of what drives her, Christie has excelled in all her academic pursuits,” a post from the British High Commission noted.
Christie started her journey and career as an educator at Independence High School in 2008. She later transferred to her alma mater Stann Creek Ecumenical College in 2010. Since then, her hard work and dedication to excellence have allowed her to rise through the ranks of the Social Science Department, where she has been the Head of the Department (HOD) for the past two years. As a school leader, Christie believes that impactful leadership can shape a mindset, instil values, and
build character. In her capacity as head of the department and teacher, Christie has had the distinctive opportunity to take the lead in curating unique learning experiences in and out of the classroom. She takes pride in the fact that she has had the privilege of moulding many young
minds, some of whom have already become influential leaders in their areas of expertise.
Christie has also been recognised by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) for her role as a master teacher of Belizean Studies and for contributing as a workshop facilitator in the 2021 Belizean Studies Professional Development Summer
Trainings. Christie has also participated in and contributed to reforming the Belizean Studies curriculum for both the primary and secondary level among many other notable educators.
