International News: Experts turn to controversial cloud seeding technology as extreme drought grips Mexico

Posted: Friday, August 4, 2023. 5:06 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Farmers are experiencing an extreme drought in Mexico leading to crop losses and a lack of water coupled with higher food prices.

The Government of Mexico is seeking ways to bring much-needed rain to the crops turning to cloud-seeking.

Cloud seeding is a controversial technology that aims to artificially stimulate rainfall.

According to CNN, it is targeting 62 municipalities to combat the effects of drought.

The technology was first discovered in the 1940s and has been used in 50 countries including the U.S. and China.

Some experts are still skeptical and cautious about the effectiveness of cloud seeding and warn that it is not a solution to drought.
