Posted: Friday, August 4, 2023. 4:44 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations held a consultation workshop for the draft National Agriculture and Food Policy.

The event was held at Kiki Witz Resort in Belmopan.

Attendees included representatives from the public and private sectors.

Technical personnel from various ministries also participated.

The National Agriculture and Food Policy aims to guide the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) and other stakeholders in addressing the main challenges faced by the agriculture sector. By doing so, the policy seeks to achieve its objectives and goals, ultimately promoting sector development and generating public revenue for the national economy.

The policy document stems out of the #Plan Belize Medium-Term Development Strategy 2022-2026.

This national development strategy has the overarching slogan “Transforming Belize into a more Inclusive and Sustainable country through Education, Innovation, Investment, and Good Governance,” with a specific focus to increase, diversify, and sustain agricultural production. This encompasses ensuring food security, generating income and employment opportunities, and improving the livelihoods and well-being of rural communities.

The policy outlines several strategic initiatives to achieve the sector goal.

These initiatives include diversifying agriculture through the Blue Economy, new growth industries, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for food security and sovereignty; Working towards import replacement and substitution, as well as expanding export opportunities to enhance economic competitiveness.

It also includes focusing on rural transformation through infrastructure development, providing affordable and accessible financing options, improving essential services, and implementing climate-smart alternatives and natural resource conservation.

The Ministry says that overall, the comprehensive policy approach indicates a commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive growth of the agriculture sector in Belize, with a focus on innovation, technology, and regional competitiveness with an emphasis on supporting rural communities and promoting environmentally responsible practices.
