International News: Kai Cenat arrested for allegedly sparking pandemonium in New York

Posted: Saturday, August 5, 2023. 10:58 pm CST.

By Celeste Chang: Kai Cenat, a popular 21-year-old Twitch streamer, sparked pandemonium in New York City with what is reported to be a gaming giveaway and is now the subject of a police investigation.

Cenat hosted a game console giveaway Friday afternoon in New York City’s Union Square Park. While Cenat had a massive turnout of thousands of young people it resulted in chaos, with dozens of arrests after people threw fireworks, paint cans and other items.

A video uploaded on the Internet from the scene showed supporters of the streamer clinging onto Cenat’s moving vehicle, and police said he was removed from the area for his safety.

Cenat is currently in police custody and the New York City Police Department reported that they were reviewing potential charges against him, including counts of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly.

The Bronx native, who currently lives in Atlanta, is one of the most-subscribed streamers of all time on the Twitch platform. His start began back in 2018 on YouTube, where he mostly posted reaction videos, vlogs and skits. He now has over 6 million followers on his Twitch account.

CBS reports, “His viral social media stunts and humorous behavior have made him a favorite among Black celebrities and the hip-hop world. Rappers including Ice Spice, Lil Baby and 21 Savage have streamed with Cenat. The rising social media star has also influenced the lexicon of many young people by popularizing the term, “rizz,” or, in other words, one’s ability to seduce or flirt with others.”
