By Celeste Chang: Officials in the city
of Chihuahua, Mexico, voted to sanction live musical performances with lyrics that degrade or discriminate against women last week.
As a penalty for those who violate the restriction, fines anywhere fron 674,000 to 1.2 million pesos (U.S. $39-$71,000) will be imposed.
Mexico, especially Chihuahua, has seen a spike in violence against women, prompting Chihuahua Mayor Marco Bonilla to call the recent surge in attacks on women a “pandemic” in a video uploaded to Facebook in late July. “Imagine that almost seven out of every 10 calls we receive on 911, unfortunately, are related to family violence, and very particularly against women…We cannot allow it and we cannot allow it to be normalized.”
Bonilla continued, “Songs promoting discrimination, marginalization or exclusion of women are also included in the ban.” Fines collected from those who violate the new law, which is an amendment to the city’s Regulations on amusements and public shows, will be given to violence restoration programs.
While the law does not specify any artists, nor are there any further details about how it will be enforced, official reports suggest that there are two distinctive forms of Mexican music being targeted, namely narcocorridos and corridos tumbados, that have been associated with violence and the drug trade.
The ban imposed in Chihuahua could have negative effects on these genres, which have gained popularity through popular artists like Peso Pluma and Natanael Cano.
