International News: Unprecedented winter heatwaves sweep South America; Climate change and El Niño blamed

Posted: Saturday, August 5, 2023. 9:40 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Several South American countries are grappling with extraordinary heatwaves during what is typically their winter season. This unexpected weather phenomenon is capturing global attention.

According to CNN, these hot temperatures result from a combination of human-induced climate change and the arrival of the weather pattern known as El Niño. Both elements are contributing to severe climatic abnormalities.

In particular, Chile and Argentina are enduring sweltering temperatures well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, far exceeding usual weather expectations for this time of year.

Renowned climatologist, Maximiliano Herrera, has characterized the situation in South America as a “fierce winter heat wave,” a term reflecting both the intensity and rarity of the occurrence.

Chile’s environment minister, Maisa Rojas, emphasized that these extreme events are not isolated, stating that the world has been experiencing unprecedented weather phenomena for several weeks.

The record-breaking temperatures have led to the issuance of several health advisories, urging residents to take precautionary measures. The situation underscores the increasingly unpredictable nature of global weather patterns and the urgent need for action to address the underlying causes.
