Belize City Council partners with UNDP and EU to implement electric bus project

By Celeste Chang: The Belize City Council has partnered with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP); the Ministry of Public Utilities, Logistics, and E-Government and the Ministry of Transportation, with generous support from the European Union to implement the use of electric buses in Belize. Belize is scheduled to receive these buses in December 2023.

The EU pilot project will be testing the new electric buses in Belizean conditions. Once the system is up and running there will be an evaluation on the performance of the vehicles. This is to ensure that the requirements are met and are at performance efficiency.  The hope of this project is to provide a long term growth of e-mobility public transportation in Belize.

These new buses will have will have a 161 mile range attained by its 206 KWH lithium ion phosphate battery. It has a warranty of 8 years or 310,000 miles. Standard features on the bus includes: power steering, regenerative braking , direct drive automatic transmission, electronically regulating air suspension, a motorized wheelchair ramp to service elderly and differently abled persons. The bus will be a 49 seater equipped with non-skid flooring, rust proof poles, passenger handrails and ramps at the front and rear end of the bus.

This helps with the vision of the Belize City Council to make Belize a smart city that is sustainable and eco friendly. By introducing the electric buses, Belize will have reliable transportation while still reducing noise pollution and Belize City’s carbon footprint.
