International News: Hospitals in Haiti treat malnourished children as violence surges

Posted: Monday, August 7, 2023. 9:30 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  The Fontaine Hospital in Haiti has seen a flow of malnourished children as the country faces a humanitarian crisis fueled by gang violence.

According to the Associated French Press, nurses and care workers weighing infants and young children and are monitoring their too-slow growth.

“Every day we receive between 120 and 160 children for vaccinations, and it’s at this point that we carry out screenings, particularly for malnutrition,” Fontaine hospital’s founder Jose Ulysse said.

In addition, some of the children are skeletal and they find it hard to breathe.

Some families receive nutritional assistance but children in critical conditions are hospitalized.

The violence in Haiti has contributed to the rise in infant malnutrition — up 30 percent in a single year — according to data published in May by Unicef.
