International News: UNICEF concerned about rise in kidnapping of women and children in Haiti

Posted: Monday, August 7, 2023. 1:02 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A report by UNICEF indicated that almost 300 women and minors have been abducted this year in Haiti.

UNICEF warned that this rise in kidnappings leave “deep physical and psychological scars.”

According to the Associated French Press, that total is the amount registered for the entire year of 2022 and triple the amount of people kidnapped in 2021.

The UN children’s agency said that in Haiti, women and children face “unthinkable terror” at the hands of violent gangs.

“The stories we are hearing from UNICEF colleagues and partners on the ground are shocking and unacceptable,” Garry Conille, the agency’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean stated.

“Women and children are not commodities. They are not bargaining chips. And they must never be exposed to such unimaginable violence,” Conille added.

Conille further said that kidnappings threaten “both the people of Haiti and those who have come to help.”

Haiti is facing a severe humanitarian crisis fueled by gang violence.

The United Nations is also concerned about the surge in malnutrition among children.
