International News: Thousands of Haitians march against gang violence

Posted: Tuesday, August 8, 2023. 9:29 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  On Monday, thousands of Haitians took to the streets to protest against gang violence.

According to Reuters, many masked protesters set government vehicles on fire and faced off with police officers demanding protection and help.

Haiti is facing a humanitarian crisis fueled by gang violence.

Data indicates that there has been a rise in kidnappings and murders in the country as gangs continue to terrorize residents.

In 2022, some 73,000 people fled Haiti as many continue to suffer in poverty.

The United Nations also says 5.2 million – nearly half Haiti’s population – need humanitarian assistance, and has urged the need for international assistance in Haiti to restore stability.
