International News: U.S. Embassy in Haiti closes amid gunfire nearby

Posted: Tuesday, August 8, 2023. 2:18 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Today, the U.S. Embassy in Haiti closed its door following rapid gunfire nearby.

Haiti is facing a severe humanitarian crisis as violent gangs continue to terrorize residents.

In addition, residents took to the streets today to protest against the gang violence.

The United States has urged nonessential personnel to leave the country citing the threat of kidnappers.

“Given the recent armed clashes between gangs and the police and the high threat of violent crime and kidnapping throughout Port-au-Prince, the Department of State urges U.S. citizens to make plans to depart Haiti As soon as possible via commercial means,” the embassy said last month.

More than 165,000 Haitians have fled their homes due to fear.

The United Nations World Food program noted that about 100,000 people are without food as the country experiences famine.
