Belize City prepares to host electric bus project

Posted: Wednesday, August 9, 2023. 2:19 pm CST.

By Celeste Chang: Two new electric buses funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with support from the European Union are expected to arrive in Belize City by the end of the year, per a statement from the Belize City Council.

The Council, Ministry of Public Utilities, Logistics and E-Governance and Ministry of Transport, supported by the UNDP and European Union, will implement a project to test the running of the buses under Belizean conditions and their efficiency, with a hope of long-term growth of e-mobile public transportation.

Each bus has 49 seats and is equipped with lithium phosphate batteries carrying an eight-year or 310 thousand mile warranty and comes with power steering, regenerative braking, direct drive electronically regulated suspension and features for elderly and disable persons including a motorized wheelchair ramp, passenger handrails and ramps at the front and rear end.

The Council envisions this as part of Belize City becoming “smart” – sustainable and eco-friendly including reliable transportation that reduces noise pollution and the municipal carbon footprint.
