Prices of vegetables soar at local markets

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Several Belizeans have taken to social media to complain about the soaring of vegetable prices at local markets across the country.

At the San Ignacio market, residents are purchasing tomatoes for a whopping $6 per pound and lettuce at $7.

Data released last month by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) indicate that the prices of fresh vegetables skyrocketed by 12%.

In addition, the average price per pound of cilantro was at $12.05.

Statistics also showed that the price of sweetpeppers rose by 8% from $3.62 per pound in 2022 to $3.91 per pound this year.

Belizeans are being encouraged to practice backyard gardening and harvesting okra, Chaya, spinach, callaloo, sweet potatoes, sweet peppers, cebollin, and tomato to fix your dinner plates.

Another way to cut costs is to limit social-dinners and prepare home-cooked meals instead.
