Exemplary educator, Marita Mejia awarded Chevening Scholarship

Posted: Monday, August 14, 2023. 11:24 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  The British High Commission announced that exemplary educator, Marita Mejia has been awarded a Chevening scholarship and will soon be leaving for the United Kingdom to pursue a Master’s degree in Special Educational Needs and Inclusion at the University of Northampton.

Mejia was born and raised in Independence Village, Stann Creek District.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Galen University.

She has worked with the Stann Creek Catholic Public Schools as a dedicated educator for 16 years.

Marita advocates for inclusive education and believes all children deserve to feel safe, heard, and supported in the classroom – only then can they be inspired to develop the attitudes, values, and skills needed to live and work in a diverse society.

In 2018, the Teacher Education and Development Services (TEDS) recognised her as one of Belize’s most outstanding and influential newly qualified teachers.

Through this recognition, she was later allowed to facilitate district and school-level workshops based on the Language Arts and Social Studies National Curriculum of Belize, unwrapping the learning outcomes and designing instructional plans that cater to the needs of all students in the classroom.

In 2020, during the peak of the pandemic, Marita gladly volunteered her services and time to the ‘Education on the Move’ program that the Ministry of Education launched. Her role was to design and record interactive Language Arts lessons for upper-division students. Realising that primary school education builds the basic framework of a child’s successful future; she saw the need to have contributed to the cause.

In addition, Marita has a special gift and interest in planning and organising events.

She was the initiator of the Belize Banana and Port Festival. An event that she started in 2018.

The primary purposes of the festival are to raise much-needed funds for the continuous development of schools and to provide scholarships to deserving students in the Banana Belt communities of southern Belize.

She is also the proud owner of Mejia’s Creation and Special Events, a small business she established in 2019 to raise additional funds to support her education.

BBN joins in congratulating Mejia!
