Healthy Habits, Healthy Schools, Healthy Belize: Ministries of Health and Education plans ‘healthification’ of schools

By Aaron Humes: The Ministries of Health and Education are planning an all-out assault on unhealthy foods and habits in schools.

Today, they launched an initiative to promote healthy eating – not just for healthy eating’s sake but because there are tangible benefits.

Schools will not only be asked to cut out sugar-sweetened drinks and foods high in sugar, salt and fat, but to provide healthy alternatives as well as water.

Education and consultation are key and stakeholders including cafeteria workers and administrators.

Ministry of Health findings say most schools have a school feeding program but still sell unhealthy foods which are often cheaper and more accessible.

The program begins with schools in the Belize District but other schools are advised to join in.

Other ministries will be involved according to officials, for instance, to change the tax regime to benefit locally produced healthy foods to make them more accessible.
