By Celeste Chang: Passing the highways in Belize, there is noticeable garbage on the side of the roads – from Styrofoam plates to plastic cups to even old shoes. These become an issue because winds and flood waters carry them to the rivers and sea, causing contamination and the deaths of sea creatures.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has started a program that allows inmates from the Belize Central Prison, Hattieville, run by the Kolbe Foundation, to actively participate in road maintenance on the highways. It has reportedly been a great success, and refreshing to see the inmates trying to make a difference.
Littering causes many issues so this initiative doesn’t only help the inmates but it also helps our country’s environmental wealth.
