By Celeste Chang: Today the chair of Caye Caulker Village Council, Seleny Villanueva-Pott, joined by Minister of Civil Aviation Andre Perez, did an inspection of the runway at the Caye Caulker Village Airstrip which has been under construction since May.
Minister Perez wrote via social media, “All indications show that the airstrip will be ready for September 2023.”
The flight from Belize City to La Isla Cariñosa is 15 minutes long and is a popular way of traveling as it is fast and displays the beauty of Belize. However the runway needed to be closed for much needed renovations.
General Manager at the Belize Airports Authority (BAA), Thea Garcia-Ramirez, stated that the runway had an issue of undulations which could pose a danger to the routine daily flights. Ramirez also stated that because Caye Caulker has no taxiway, the activity on the runway must come to a halt entirely during the six weeks needed for the rehabilitation.
