By Aaron Humes: Police officer Ryan Bainton, 26, has been accused of taking a motorcycle impounded by police at his workplace, the Hattieville Police Station, without lawful authority.
Bainton was charged with theft and set bail of $1,000. He is due back in court on September 25 and pleaded not guilty.
Deputy Officer Commanding Hattieville Police, Inspector Mark Bernard, reported to Crimes Investigation Branch that on June 16, a black Lifan 150 motorcycle was brought in following a minor road traffic accident within Hattieville. The motorcycle, with an estimated value of $3,500, was impounded at the Hattieville Police Station compound because it had no proper document of ownership. The motorcycle was then labeled as found property because no documents could be presented for it by anyone, hence it became the property of the Government of Belize.
On August 4, the motorcycle was noted missing from where it was stored under the Police barracks behind the station building. It had last been seen by Inspector Bernard on Thursday evening August 3 around 5:30 p.m.
A review of surveillance cameras at the station uncovered that the motorcycle was allegedly removed by P.C. Bainton around 9:10 p.m. without lawful authority through the back gate after he cut off the lights under the building from inside the barracks. He was on the late shift at the time and returned about 15 minutes later through the same back entrance without the motorcycle.
