Prime Minister says prices going up internationally; aware of price gouging in Belize

Posted: Thursday, August 17, 2023. 8:55 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  During a segment on Open Your Eyes this week, Prime Minister John  Briceño said that prices of food products are going up internationally due to inflation. He says he is also aware that some businesses in Belize are allegedly price gouging.

“We have not raised tax on a single item, to say that, “Oh, the government is taxing us.”  That has nothing to do with us. As I said, over and over, this is imported.  Many of our food items are zero-rated, many of them,” the Prime Minister said.

In addition, the Prime Minister asserted that the Government of Belize has discussed with importers and retailers on what can be done to stem the rising costs of products.

However, he is aware of some businesses allegedly engaging in price gouging.

“The truth of the fact is that yes, goods are going up internationally, but also there are some unscrupulous businesspeople that take advantage of it,” he added.

P.M. Briceño says that the purchasing patterns of consumers have also changed.
