By Breaking Belize News Staff: Another person is dead in Mexico due to flooding conditions associated with Tropical Storm Hilary.
Hilary had made landfall as a Category 2 storm in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula on Saturday and weakened into a Tropical Storm; however, the heavy rains associated with the storm brought deadly flooding to affected areas. CNN reports that a man who was inside his vehicle was swept away by flood waters in the city of Santa Rosalía. On Saturday, a family of five was reportedly swept into the sea while trying to cross a stream, Reuters reports. One person from the group has been confirmed dead.
While Hilary lost strength after making landfall, the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that it has picked up speed, moving at 25 miles per hour, up from the 16 miles per hour recorded on Saturday. Despite being considerably weaker, the storm is still expected to bring as much as ten inches of rain in some areas and its winds have authorities in Southern California concerned that power outages may occur from damaged infrastructure.
If Hilary manages to make landfall in Southern California, it will be the first storm to do so since an unnamed tropical storm hit in 1939, Reuters reports. Tropical Storm warnings remain in place for several areas within Southern California, and hundreds of flights have been canceled due to the storm.
Authorities have called on residents in affected areas to limit movement to essential travel only, as the storm continues its approach.
