By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Club Deportivo Benque, known as Police Benque due to their association with Premier League of Belize franchise holders Police United, beat Altitude 3-2 at Independence and replaced them as the Opening Season leaders.
This was the first visit of ex-Altitude coach Wilmer Garcia to his stomping grounds at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium where he plied his trade for many years as player and coach. And it proved to be successful over Altitude and Zerrick Torres who used to be his assistant during his Altitude days.
Jhon Valencia led Police Benque with a brace in the 10th and 56th minutes. Elias Iglesias nailed the second goal in the 38th.
Rene Leslie 15’ tied the game after falling behind 1-0 in the 15th minute but Police Benque rallied back to the top to lead 3-1. Djmari Pop scored Altitude’s second goal in the 76th for the final 3-2 in favour of the visitors.
“It was a good match,” Police Benque wrote on Altitude’s Facebook Page after the match. “A match where we both had to pour our very soul into it to win. You’re a great opponent! Looking forward for your future achievements as well.”
Police Benque are now at the top of the PLB with seven points, one more than second place Altitude.
After the game, Altitude retired Dalton Eiley’s number 23 jersey. Eiley played for Altitude over the last few years but has been active in the PLB from Sagitun days representing the country with the Belize Men’s National Team in the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup.
Scoreline:
Altitude 2-3 Police Benque
A: Rene Leslie 15’, Djmari Pop 76’
PB: Jhon Valencia 10’, 56’, Elias Iglesias 38’
