Shooting in San Ignacio leaves freelance journalist Joseph Budna injured, minor dead

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A horrifying shooting occurred on the night of Sunday, August 20th, 2023, at Smith’s Farm located on Branch Mouth Road, San Ignacio Town, Cayo. San Ignacio Police received a distress call at 9:40 pm and promptly responded to the scene.

At a yellow bungalow wooden house, measuring 12 x 12 feet, police officers found Joseph Budna, 43, a Belizean Freelance Journalist. Budna informed the police that he was inside his bedroom, accompanied by a male minor, when he heard dogs barking and then several gunshots.

Budna reported feeling a burning sensation and realized that he was shot below his left knee and in the left and right side of his hip. The minor was also shot in his left upper back and the middle of his left thigh. Sadly, the minor succumbed to his injuries at the San Ignacio Community Hospital, where Budna is listed in stable condition.

Crime scene investigators recovered ten 9mm expended casings outside the bedroom section, along with three slugs and three fragmented slugs inside the bedroom. The police have issued a Medico-Legal Form to Budna and are canvassing the area for witnesses.

The minor was pronounced dead at 10:56 pm by Dr. Mai, and his body awaits a post-mortem examination at the San Ignacio Community Hospital Morgue.

As the investigation continues, San Ignacio Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that could assist in solving this crime.
