By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes have been suffering both in the Central American League where they have been beaten the times and in the Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Opening Season in which they started off on a bad foot tying their first two games. Things changed this past Saturday though when they were able to pull off a 4-2 win over age-old rivals Wagiya.
In the match played at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio, Verdes had the Dangriga side 4-0 down up to the 80th minute when Wagiya had a late surge.
After being unable to garner more than one goal per game in their first two encounters, Verdes had a superb seven-minute run in the first half nailing three goals between the 23rd and 30th minutes. Uruguayan Nicolas Rocha converted a brace in the 23rd and 30th minutes while Krisean Lopez struck in between in the 25th. Jordy Polanco completed Verdes’ haul in the 52’.
Verdes appeared satisfied with the 4-0 lead, but Wagiya weren’t going home without getting on the scoreboard. They pushed forward in the final ten minutes and got a pair of goals from Kofi Nnadi in the 80th minute and from Felix Martinez in the 89th for the final 4-2.
Totalling five points from three games, Verdes moved up from fifth place to third in the PLB standings while Wagiya, with three points, dropped from fourth to seventh place.
Scoreline:
Verdes 4-2 Wagiya
V: Nicolas Rocha 23’, 30’, Krisean Lopez 25’, Jordy Polanco 52’
W: Kofi Nnadi 80’, Felix Martinez 89’
