National Community Oriented Policing Unit donates 50 school bags to children in Belize District

Posted: Wednesday, August 23, 2023. 2:56 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Today, 50 students from the Belize District received school supplies, including school bags, for the new school year.

The donation was possible through a partnership with the National Community Oriented Policing Unit and the Shirley Roberts Young Foundation for Support and Education out of New York, USA.

The National Community Policing Unit continues to seek partnerships, at home and abroad, with the view of helping young people become successful adults and lead crime free lives.

“We believe our efforts will foster positive community relationships, improve perceptions of the police, and help children start the school year on a positive note. It can also contribute to crime prevention by creating a sense of trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the community,” Commander of Community Policing Howell Gillett said.

In addition, Gillett says that donating school supplies to children helps law enforcement build trust and rapport with the community, especially among young individuals.

“It showcases law enforcement’s commitment to the well-being and success of children, creating positive associations that can counter negative stereotypes,” Gillett added.

Gillett says that he believes law enforcement’s involvement in keeping children in school also enhances community relationships and trust.
