By Aaron Humes: A Lords’ Bank man accused of beating his pregnant common-law wife is out on bail tonight.
46-year-old Antonio Teul appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola, charged with wounding and using insulting words, and pleaded not guilty. He met bail of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount and is due back in court on October 25.
Teul’s common-law wife told police that on August 22 she was at home with her two children when he arrived and began accusing her of cheating, hurling insults including “liar” and “b—h” and degrading words and saying she was disrespecting him.
He is then accused of throwing a cell phone at her forehead, demanding she listen to him while he is talking, then hitting her with a fist in the left eye and nose and then again on the neck with a broomstick. She called for assistance, reported the matter, and requested court action. She has also since moved out of the house they shared.
There was no objection to bail since the couple do not live together, but the Chief Magistrate ordered that he keep his distance from the complainant, her family, and other prosecution witnesses and maintain a 100-yard distance from them. He is also to avoid being arrested or charged with other offenses.
