Posted: Sunday, August 27, 2023. 7:06 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) has announced it will be hosting a regional Scientific Conference featuring 130 authors and speakers from both the Caribbean and other international locations. These experts will delve into nine significant thematic areas pertinent to the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Scheduled for Monday, 28 August, the virtual conference will kick off at 8:30 a.m. Central Standard Time or 10:30 a.m. Eastern Caribbean Time. Additionally, the event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Carla Barnett, Secretary-General of the CARICOM Secretariat, will inaugurate the conference with opening remarks. Dr. Renata Clarke from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, acting as the Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean, is set to present the Feature Address. The opening ceremony will also feature speeches from distinguished figures like Sen. Hon. Avinash Singh from Trinidad and Tobago, Ms. Shandira Ankiah, Mr. Milton Haughton, and Dr. Sandra Grant. Mr. Zojindra Arjune will grace the occasion with an invocation.

This e-conference aims to shed light on the significant strides made since the CRFM’s inception in 2002 by the CARICOM Heads of Government. It’s envisioned as a platform for networking, information dissemination, and fostering discussions on pivotal topics. These include fisheries’ role in regional food security, policy-making for fisheries, sustainable fisheries development, capacity building, conservation efforts, the implications of climate change and ocean acidification, and the role of CRFM in fostering blue economic growth.

Spanning four days, the Scientific Conference will conclude on 31 August, where national reports detailing the state of fisheries and aquaculture industries from the 17 CRFM Member States will be presented.

The CRFM, a CARICOM intergovernmental organization, has a membership that encompasses nations like Anguilla, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, among others.

For those interested in delving deeper into the conference’s details or to attend, more information is available on the Conference’s official webpage.
