International News: Three black individuals killed by white shooter with lawfully acquired firearms in Florida

Posted: Sunday, August 27, 2023. 6:40 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A chilling racially-motivated attack at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida left three black individuals dead at the hands of a white gunman who purchased his firearms legally, according to a recent report by South China Morning Post.

21-year-old Ryan Christopher Palmeter, the identified assailant, took his own life after a standoff with police. Sheriff TK Waters disclosed that Palmeter had sent a message to his father during the course of the attack, leading to the discovery of a suicide note and racist writings in his room.

Despite having no criminal record, Palmeter had been involuntarily committed for a mental health examination in 2017. “There were no red flags,” Waters remarked. Shockingly, the only thing on file for the shooter was a single domestic violence call involving his brother.

Authorities have come forward describing the attack as explicitly racially motivated, after uncovering “several manifestos” penned by Palmeter outlining his animosity towards black individuals. Waters gave a detailed account of the events, noting that the first victim, 52-year-old Angela Michelle Carr, was gunned down in her vehicle outside the store. AJ Laguerre, 19, and Gerrald Gallion, 29, were subsequently killed inside the store. Palmeter, wearing a tactical vest and facial covering, was armed with both an “AR-15 style” rifle, displaying swastikas, and a Glock handgun.

The day prior to the Dollar General attack, Palmeter was turned away from Edward Waters University, a historically black college, after refusing to identify himself.

US President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Sunday, coinciding with the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington, condemning the act and emphasizing the imperative to root out white supremacy in America. “Silence is complicity and we must not remain silent,” Biden urged.

Florida Governor and potential presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis, echoed the sentiments, lambasting the shooter’s racist intentions and his subsequent suicide.

The US Justice Department has now stepped in, classifying the attack as both a hate crime and an “act of racially motivated violent extremism,” as stated by Attorney General Merrick Garland.
