By Aaron Humes: There can only be one, and on Saturday night at the Civic Center, Kendall Morgan was selected as Queen of the Bay designate 2023-2024 to approval from the audience.
First runner-up or second place went to Keely Faux of Stann Creek West and second runner-up or third place to Neveah Ramos of Belmopan. Morgan also won a special prize from the Belize Cancer Society for her portrayal of a woman with breast cancer in Belize.
Among the minor prizes, Miss Amity went to Naya Bodden (Belize City); Miss Eloquence to Alina Iglesias (Corozal); Miss Elegant to Keely Faux (Stann Creek West); Best Curtsey to Faux (the formal segment in which the delegates pay respect to the incumbent and to the audience); Best Talent to Tori Chaplin (Stann Creek Central); and Miss Photogenic to Neveah Ramos (Belmopan).
Queen Jarene Avila of the Toledo committee was named best coordinator – the handler in charge of each delegate from each district committee. The 2022 ‘Best Delegate’ award, for non-winners from the previous pageant who continue to work on behalf of the organization in their area, went to Corozal’s Kelsey Zetina.
According to a statement from the Queen of the Bay Committee, the line of Queens represents the best attributes of Belize: “The Queen of the Bay is our emblem of freedom, a living expression of our love of Belize and our patriotic duty to our country. The Loyal and Patriotic Order of the Baymen, founders of the pageant, decided that the Queen should be pure as our waters; sweet as our sugar and oranges; tall and straight as a pine tree; strong and beautiful as a mahogany tree; and that all young Belizean woman have the right to aspire to be the Queen, provided that she is a Belizean, of Belizean heritage, and over eighteen.”
Morgan will be crowned by outgoing Queen Maslin Hanson on September 10.
