By Aaron Humes: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has applied for a permit to protest in response to the Government’s handling of the case of Minister Andre Perez, now on leave of absence following the uncovering of an inappropriate relationship with an attorney.
The problem appears to be the location, which is the Grand Caribe Resort north of downtown which is the site of this week’s Investment Summit 2023 where Prime Minister John Briceño and others will be present.
Appearing on Channel 7 News’ Sunup program, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said he denied the permit in that area for two reasons: one, his judgment that the protest is not relevant to the purpose of the summit and would cause “embarrassment” on an international stage; and two, that police would be too stretched trying to police both events.
The Commissioner suggested as a compromise that the protest be held either before the summit on Tuesday or Wednesday (the summit begins on Thursday morning), or after on Saturday or even Sunday, pending approval by Opposition Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow.
