By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City taxi driver pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, sparing his passenger who was arrested along with him when police made the bust of over half pound of weed on Monday.
Jovi Anthony Carballo, 36, a cab driver appeared along with his passenger Arnold Anderson in court today where they were jointly charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply to another.
Carballo initially pleaded not guilty and wanted to plea guilty to possession simplicita but the prosecution told the court it would only accept a guilty plea to drug trafficking from Carballo, which he agreed to. The Senior Magistrate took into consideration that this was his first conviction for drugs and saved the court time by pleading guilty. He was given a non custodial sentence and a fine of $1,500 was imposed upon him.
Carballo has until November 30 to pay the fine, in default, one year in jail. With that, the charge against Anderson was withdrawn.
Both men were arrested on Monday after police stopped Carballo’s taxi on Iguana Street Extension, which was heavily tinted, and conducted a search. In the vehicle, police found two plastic bags with marijuana amounting to 247 grams.
