International News: Heavy metal weed: study finds consumers may experience elevated levels of lead and cadmium in blood, urine

By Celeste Chang: NBC News reports that a study by researchers from Columbia University has found that users of marijuana may experience elevated levels of lead and cadmium, heavy metals linked to long-term health issues which can be found in their blood and urine.

Over 7,200 adults were tested. 358 who had used marijuana during the past 30 days were found to have 27 percent higher levels of lead in their blood than those who did not use either marijuana or tobacco and 22 percent higher levels of cadmium, according to result published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Urine samples showed similar results.

The team knew going in according to NBC that cannabis plants can be and are particularly good at absorbing heavy metals from soil which settle into the leaves and flowers, but the new findings demonstrate that heavy metals can also wind up in the human body.

There is no safe amount of lead exposure as even low levels of lead can slow a child’s brain development and result in learning and behavioral problems, while adults face an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart problems and kidney damage. Cadmium is considered a human carcinogen (cancer-causing agent) by the World Health Organization (WHO), with exposure to levels through tobacco smoke for example may lead to kidney disease and fragile bones.
