By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr. Louis Zabaneh met with educators of Catholic Schools in Cayo.

The meeting was held at Sacred Heart Parish to discuss competency based education with educators and principals.

Dr. Zabaneh explained that competency based education is more student centered since in contrast to the traditional classroom, students will be assessed on the mastery of their application of skills with the knowledge learnt.

“With competency based training, students are being assessed on the mastery of the knowledge and the application of that knowledge into skills that they are able to exhibit those attitudes. It’s a complete shift now to the student in the classroom exhibiting these masteries,” Zabaneh explained.

Educators countrywide are attending workshops and exploring competency based education and its methodologies.

“It’s a process, we are in the process of where educators have begun to understand components of competency based education. What will be the new methodologies that we need to use to be able to develop those skills, project based learning, problem based learning, inquiry based learning,” Zabaneh added.

Zabaneh said that students will be assessed using formative exams.

“Away from using mostly summative exams to also formative exams. So that they can get other aspects of that child’s mastery of the information that they are learning. These are some of the areas that the teachers are beginning to get trained on,” Zabaneh stated.
