By Breaking Belize News Staff: The UDP Executive of Belize Rural South (BRS) finds itself amidst internal turmoil, as reports emerge of a swift move by Party leader Shyne Barrow to oust the Belize Rural South Standard Bearer, Jazeli Azueta, and associated executive members. This move was precipitated by the party’s decision to import a crowd from Belize City to stage a protest in San Pedro, an action the local executive publicly denounced.

However, the story takes a deeper turn with a statement from a fervent UDP member from Belize Rural South. This member, who identifies as a staunch supporter of the party but is not part of the executive, laments the party’s apparent turn towards punitive measures against those who simply voiced dissent. Labeling the recent proceedings as a “kangaroo court,” the member accuses the party of sidelining voices that merely exercised their freedom of speech. “We in the UDP MUST learn to listen! The voice of the people is the voice of God!” the statement reads.

In a passionate critique, the member describes the qualities of a true leader through an acronym of the word LEADER – Listen, Empathy, Active collaborator, Decent, Engaging, Respectful. By these measures, they imply that Barrow falls short, especially in terms of listening to the concerns of his “generals on the island.”

This statement touches upon the deeper cultural nuances of San Pedro, emphasizing its unique identity compared to other regions in Belize. The writer laments that the local executive’s decision to consult with the business sector and various societal sectors, a hallmark of the island’s open and dynamic culture, was not respected.

The critique ends with an urgent appeal to all party supporters, emphasizing the importance of unity as they approach an upcoming election, warning against division and stressing the importance of a leader’s ability to listen. The statement concludes with a powerful reminder of democratic values, indirectly juxtaposing Barrow’s actions with those of authoritarian leaders: “Last time I checked, our leader is not Vladimir Putin, or am I wrong? Last time I check, we live in a democratic country where our constitution allows every Belizean, including UDPs, the freedom of speech.”

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the internal dynamics of the UDP will shape the political future of Belize Rural South.
