By Aaron Humes: Jason McKenzie, a 32-year-old Construction Worker and Mechanic residing in Belama Phase 5, Belize City, was brought before the court late Friday in connection with the murder of James Dorian Escarpeta, which took place on July 26 in Belize City.

Given the gravity of the charge, no plea was recorded during the arraignment. McKenzie is not eligible for bail on such a charge and, consequently, has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 3.

James Escarpeta, 38, a resident of George Street, Belize City, met a tragic end as he was walking on West Street towards Water Lane. An assailant approached him from behind, drew a firearm, and fired a shot. The gunshot led to Escarpeta’s instantaneous collapse onto the pavement.

The untimely death of Escarpeta spurred authorities to declare a State of Emergency, fearing possible retaliations and a further surge in violence.
