By Aaron Humes: After their no-case-to-answer submission was denied last week, brothers Tyrone and Ellis Meighan this week stood in the dock to deny being members of a gang.

While the pair are originally from Banak Street and have long had an association with that area, Tyrone told the court in an unsworn statement that he has moved to Placencia and is lawfully employed as a construction worker and tour guide.

Both invoked their mother as not tolerating involvement in gang activity around her.

Tyrone addressed being previously charged with this offense on February 4, 2020, and both say it was all fabricated and made up specifically to tarnish their reputations. Both men said they are not a member of a gang nor were they ever a member of a gang.

Tyrone Meighan with the permission of the court displayed his tattoos which he said are family-related.

The brothers also deny knowledge of any graffiti related to gangs in the Banak Street area.

The Crown’s case was based on mostly police witnesses where as many as 14 police witnesses were a part of the case. Four were called to testify in court and the others’ statements were read into evidence in the trial.

A decision will be handed down on September 5. Tyrone and Ellis Meighan remain on remand at the Belize Central Prison after they were charged criminally with another offense whilst out on bail granted to them by the High Court.
