Minister of Education reports surge in enrollment due to free education program

Posted: Saturday, September 2, 2023. 10:17 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Francis Fonseca, the Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, has highlighted a significant rise in student enrollments in schools, particularly those benefiting from the free education program in Southside Belize City.

Schools like Maud Williams, Sadie Vernon, and Gwen Liz have witnessed this surge in numbers. “Originally, we were aiming to onboard about 1000 students, considering we previously had around 800. We were looking at an increase of maybe 200, but we anticipate surpassing that number,” Minister Fonseca remarked.

Furthermore, the ministry has expanded the program to encompass three schools in Toledo and two in the Stann Creek District.

Celebrating the successful implementation of the program, Minister Fonseca asserted that the ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to further invest and sustain this initiative.
