International News: Rising drug cartel violence puts U.S. Consulate in Matamoros on edge

Posted: Saturday, September 9, 2023. 6:35 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In light of intensifying gun violence, the United States Consulate in Matamoros, Mexico, issued a “shelter in place” directive to its employees last Monday.

Located on the border with Brownsville, Texas, Matamoros has seen an uptick in violence attributed to drug cartels and their associated trafficking activities.

Earlier this year, a particularly grim incident saw the abduction of four individuals in Matamoros by cartel members, which resulted in the tragic death of two Americans in what seems to have been a case of mistaken identity.

Of special concern is the fact that Matamoros is a key route for Belizean transmigrantes. These individuals, responsible for transporting vehicles, parts, and equipment from the U.S. for resale in Belize, have frequently relayed tales of their own unsettling confrontations with Mexico’s criminal factions during their journeys.
