By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a recent statement, US President Joe Biden cast doubt on China’s capacity to invade Taiwan in light of its current economic difficulties. Addressing the media during his visit to Vietnam, following the G-20 leaders’ summit in India, Biden commented on China’s economic conundrum, attributing it to issues related to international growth and its domestic policies. He posited, “China probably doesn’t have the same capacity as it had before.”
The U.S. President met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the summit, but the notable absence was Chinese President Xi Jinping, who chose not to attend the G-20. When questioned about not meeting President Xi for almost a year, Biden remarked that Xi “has his hands full right now.” The two leaders might meet next at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco this November.
China’s economic woes come amid heightened tensions between the two global giants over their technological advancements. China’s recent move to ban iPhones for its state-owned enterprises signifies a broader sweep than the previously announced limitations on government agencies alone. This decision is reminiscent of the 2017 US legislation that restricted Pentagon networks from using equipment manufactured by Huawei Technologies Co. or ZTE. Addressing these concerns, Biden asserted, “I’m not going to sell China material that would increase their capacity to make more nuclear weapons or engage in defense activities.”
Adding to the tech rivalry, Huawei unveiled a phone incorporating technology that the U.S. has been eager to keep away from Beijing. This discovery, coupled with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s trip to China and the G-20 summit, might impede the recent US efforts to mend its ties with China. The Commerce Department is investigating the new chip in Huawei’s latest smartphone to discern its production process and determine any potential US response.
Emphasizing the US’s stance on China, Biden clarified, “I don’t want to contain China, I just want to ensure our relationship is transparent and clear.”
While Biden and Xi have not communicated since the G-20 summit in Bali in 2022, recent months witnessed increased dialogues between the two nations. It is still uncertain if these discussions will lead to significant resolutions.
