In his statement, PM Briceño said, “Happy 225th Anniversary of St. George’s Caye Day. Our September celebrations are a time to reflect on those values and customs that make us uniquely Belize 🇧🇿.”
He further emphasized the importance of celebrating the day safely amidst ongoing global health concerns, urging Belizeans to “Enjoy the festivities safely with family and friends.”
Most notably, the Prime Minister accentuated the need to pass down the traditions and historical understanding to the younger generations. He stated, “Let’s commit to teaching our younger generations why we celebrate and the significance of this day for who we are as a nation and people, and our now independent Belize.”
St. George’s Caye Day is one of the most significant national holidays in Belize, commemorating the Battle of St. George’s Caye in 1798 when the British settlers and their allies defeated the Spanish navy.
This day serves as a reminder of the resilience, unity, and identity of Belizeans and underscores the importance of safeguarding the nation’s rich history and traditions.
