Twin towns unveil action-packed patriotic activities for Belize’s 42nd Independence anniversary

Posted: Monday, September 11, 2023. 10:37 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  The Twin Towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena are gearing up to offer a dynamic line-up of events this September, as Belize marches towards its 42nd Independence Day celebrations.

With a rich tapestry of talent shows, art walks, and special days to celebrate national pride, the Towns promise a heady mix of culture, color, and community spirit. This comes as part of the country’s nationwide push to engage Belizeans both at home and abroad, bringing communities together in these unprecedented times.

Here’s a sneak peek into the week’s schedule, crafted thoughtfully by the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council:

  • September 11: ‘Christian Explosion’ begins at 7pm at Dunamis Ministries, inviting all for a spiritual celebration.
  • September 13: A platform for the youth, the Children’s Talent Show will be held at the Cayo Welcome Center.
  • September 15: It’s a day of national colors! Adorn yourself in red, white, and blue and cap off the evening with a beer fest at 7pm at the Cayo Welcome Center.
  • September 16: A day of diverse activities featuring an Art Walk, Adult Talent Show, and the much-anticipated Cayo Jouvert, all at the Cayo Welcome Center.
  • September 17: The crowning of Miss Chiquitita Queen awaits at the Cayo Welcome Center.

In the build-up to Independence Day, the country will come together for National Service Day on September 19. This day marks a national commitment to community clean-ups and acts of service from coast to coast.

The symbolic flag raising on September 20 at the San Ignacio administration building sets the stage for the grand celebrations. Independence Day itself will see a grand ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Santa Elena Sports Complex, followed by a parade concluding at Macal Park.
