Police name driver who knocked down Philip Goldson bust

By Aaron Humes: Some Belizeans could not help but see symbolism in a traffic accident on Saturday morning just before the Carnival J’ouvert.

That is when a driver got into a mishap that caused the bust of Belizean patriot, Philip Goldson, mounted at the northern entrance to Belize City, to be knocked down.

A.C.P. Hilberto Romero, Regional Commander, Eastern Division, gave details: “On the ninth day of September 2023, there was an R.T.A. (road traffic accident) by the Flag Monument. Information received was that Mervin Domingo was driving a van and Elojio Solis was driving a car when they were involved in a traffic accident. Police responded and have since detained Mervin Domingo. The investigation revealed that he was at fault. He has since been charged with “Driving Motor Vehicle without Due Care and Attention” and “Driving Motor Vehicle Above the Prescribed Limit (of alcohol).” During the [accident], the Philip Goldson monument received damages, so we are looking at that part of the investigation.”
