By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Government of Belize is honoring former U.S. President Jimmy Carter by awarding the prestigious Order of Belize for recognition of his distinguished record of friendship and support to Belize.
“Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, is renowned for his democratic and humanitarian endeavors – contributions that extend to Belize. Under his leadership, the United States and Belize promoted democracy and peace negotiations in the region. Through initiatives like the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, which built homes for those in need, he has touched the lives of many Belizeans,” the U.S. Embassy noted.
The Government noted that during a meeting chaired by former U.S. presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford in 1986, The Council of Freely Elected Heads of Government was formed.
Its objectives were to reinforce democracy in the Americas, promote multilateral efforts to resolve conflict in the hemisphere, and advance regional economic cooperation.
It was this kind of work that led the Rt. Hon. George Price to join in the effort, becoming the vice chairman of the council.
Together, Carter and Price took part in election missions in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua and Panama.
The award was received by President Carter’s daughter, Amy Carter.
U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan hosted former President Carter’s daughter, Amy, who received the Order of Belize on his behalf — an honor well-deserved for his unwavering dedication to a better world.
