By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two men were remanded to prison today on a charge of handling stolen goods for a stolen sweater valued at $15.
Eric Tillett and Deon Derrick Jones were both arraigned in court on a single charge each of handling stolen goods. Jones pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods. He was fined $100 plus $5 cost of court due by October 27, in default, one month in jail.
Tillett also pleaded guilty and was fined $200 plus $5 cost of court due October 31, in default, two months in jail.
Both men, however, were found to owe the court outstanding fines for previous crimes. Jones owes the court $1,505 and Tillett owes the court $1,505 but neither men could make a payment before the end of the day as stipulated by the court so both were sent to prison to serve time in lieu of their fines.
The owner of the sweater reported to police that it was stolen from his home on September 13 and a few days later while walking he saw a man walking, wearing the sweater which he recognized and so he called the police.
