By Horace Palacio: A brazen daylight robbery occurred on Cemetery Road in Belize City at the frequently visited La Popular Bakery yesterday afternoon. The police were alerted at 5:10 p.m., approximately twenty minutes following the incident.
The cashier of the establishment recounted the harrowing series of events from that afternoon. She stated that around 4:50 p.m., both she and the on-duty security officer were inside when an unknown male stepped into the bakery.
This man, described as a tall, brown-skinned individual about 5’10” in height, donned a light grey shirt, blue jean shorts, and a grey cap. His face was hidden behind a mask. At first, he appeared as an ordinary customer, perusing as if planning to buy something. But the atmosphere quickly became tense when he unveiled a chrome-colored 9mm pistol tucked inside a green plastic bag.
The robber quickly cornered both of them behind the counter, demanding that they raise their hands and that the cashier open the cash register. Concerned for their safety, the cashier complied, handing over an unspecified amount of money, which the robber placed in his green bag.
After the theft, the perpetrator made a swift exit from La Popular Bakery, fleeing on foot towards Central American Boulevard. Thankfully, no physical injuries were reported.
In response to the incident, officers quickly arrived at the scene. Preliminary actions involved a thorough canvassing of the surrounding area. They were able to view footage from nearby surveillance cameras, which has provided valuable leads in the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the robbery or the unidentified assailant is urged to contact the nearest police station.
